story

tells

about

the

battles

of

the

Japanese

Army

in

the

island

of硫磺岛，and

how

they

have

been

a

symbol

of

war

and

atrocities

against

humanity．Here

is

1943,

when

the

Japanese

Army

wasn’t

as

strong

as

it

was

now.

After

the

United

States

lost

the

battle

in

Makin

Island,

the

importance

of

this

island

came

to

light

again.

The

Japanese

appointed

Shinko

Taneda

chief

of

staff

and

said

that

American

army

could

not

be

defeated

because

they

had

an

absolute

advantage

in

terms

of

sea

and

air

power.

They

should

focus

on

building

strong

fortifications

along

the

coast

and

build

a

deep

defensive

line.

The

Japanese

used

30th

Division,

which

consisted

of

two

battalions,

to

defend

this

island.

They

built

their

own

concrete

walls

instead

of

using

stone

and

naturally

formed

holes.

The

Japanese

also

set

up

many

ground

mines

to

create

an

effective

defense

against

American

forces.

On

February

19,

20,600

American

soldiers

landed

in

the

area,

outnumbering

them

by

5:1.

As

soon

as

they

had

established

their

defensive

positions,

American

soldiers

began

to

engage

in

gunfights

and

attacks

on

Japanese

soldiers.

However,

with

the

help

of

naval

support

from

the

US

Sixth

Fleet,

which

carried

out

a

continuous

bombing

campaign,

the

Japanese

army

was

unable

to

take

full

advantage

of

its

advantages

of

sea

power.

After

36

days

of

hard

fighting,

they

were

beaten

by

the

American

soldiers.

The

commander

of

the

2nd

Division,

General

Kanagawa

Tatsunaga,

led

a

group

of

men

to

the

South

of

Sugamo

on

February

19,

and

they

had

made

great

sacrifices

in

the

battle.

However,

with

the

help

of

the

naval

support

of

the

US

Sixth

Fleet,

the

American

forces

finally

launched

an

offensive

against

the

Japanese

army.

They

managed

to

capture

only

2000

tons

of

explosives.

The

American

soldiers

started

attacking

the

Japanese

army’s

defensive

positions

directly

from

hiding

spots

and

didn’t

show

any

mercy

towards

them.

By

the

time

they

had

reached

the

American

soldiers’

main

defenses,

they

had

already

detonated

their

bombs

and

killed

all

the

Americans.

At

the

same

time,

about

4,000

soldiers

took

part

in

a

final

suicide

strike

with

swords

and

knives

to

destroy

the

American

army.

In

addition,

3,000

soldiers

from

the

1st

Division

who

were

trying

to

leave

the

island

formed

a

daring

unit

and

led

their

group

of

300

men

to

attack

the

American

army.

This

resulted

in

a

total

loss

of

life

of

6821

people.

The

number

of

wounded

was

21865

people.

Over

2

million

people

died

as

a

result

of

this

battle,

with

the

US

losing

1,083

lives

and

the

Japanese

losing

2,338.
