"Great

Depression"

is

a

period

of

severe

economic

downturn

the

1930s

typhoons,

famines

swept

China.

Many

farmers

lost

everything

they

had

produced

during

the

past

ten

years

due

to

the

drought,

while

other

regions

experienced

famine.

This

resulted

in

millions

of

deaths,

starvation,

and

displacement

of

people

from

their

homes. In

this

case

study,

we

will

focus

on

a

specific

photo

taken

by

photographer

Frank

Loesser

in

1942

from

the

perspective

of

an

American

correspondent,

who

documented

the

devastation

caused

by

the

Great

Depression

in

China.

He

described

the

situation

vividly

through

his

words: "The

crops

were

destroyed

and

livestock

starved

to

death.

The

entire

countryside

was

covered

with

ruins,"

he

reported.
